PATRICK, THE APOSTLE OF IRELAND

PATRICK lived from 389 to 461, his birthplace is unclear. His father was CALPURNIUS, a Roman-British official and deacon. When he was 16, PATRICK was captured. In this time he became "a man of prayer and sincere religion" (dictionary of Saints).
PATRICK had to face a lot of dangers. After sudies in France he became disciple of ST. GERMANUS at AUXERRE. Consecrated as bishop, he followed PALLADIUS in 432 as missionary bishop of Ireland. Travelling throughout Ireland, he evangelized and organized a lot. He was successful in converting the Irish chiefs. In 454 he established his episcopal seat at ARMAGH. PATRICK was said to have explained Trinity by reference to a shamrock, eventually becoming his emblem. His cult also came to America, where New York's main cathedral is dedicated to him. His feast-day is 17 March.

It was surely no big deal converting barbarians being mostly and widely simple-minded, but nontheless a dangerous job for a monk.
